Glossary of Steel Terms
Steel – An alloy consisting mostly or iron, normally with a small carbon content which is used as an alloying material. Used in many different buildings and products, including Prefabricated Garages (Fertiggaragen) constructions.
Iron – A chemical element with the symbol Fe and the atomic number 26. Iron is soft, lustrous and silvery in colour. It is a relative to steel and one of the few ferromagnetic elements.
prefabricated homes (http://www.prohaus.com) – Similar in many ways to a pre-fab garage, these kits are bigger and require more extensive construction and expertise.
Blister Steel – Also known as the cementation process. An obsolete method of making steel by carburization of iron. Developed before the 17th century, this method increased the amount of carbon in the iron.
Crucible steel – A number of different techniques for making steel alloy. This method involves the heating or cooling of pure iron and carbon in a crucible.
Pig Iron – The intermediate product of smelting iron ore with coke, usually by using limestone as a flux. A brittle material with a very high carbon content.
Stainless Steel – A steel alloy with a minimum of 10% chronium content by mass. It is unique as this type of steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as normal steel does. It is also known as corrosion resistant steel.
Prefabrication – The practice of assembling the components of a structure in a factory or another site and assembling them later at the final construction site. pre-fab concrete garage (Beton Fertiggarage) buildings are a good example of these types of constructions, as are whirlpools (hydropools.de) and spas.
Prefabricated Garages (Fertiggaragen) – Steel or metal constructions that are assembled off-site and are then made into the final garage buildings in the on-site environment.
Slag – The by product of smelting ore to purify metals. A mixture of metal oxides, metal sulfides and metal atoms in their elemental form.
Basic Oxygen Steelmaking – A method in which carbon rich molten iron is made into steel. A historical improvement over the Bessemer process.
Bessemer Process – The mass production of steel from molten pig iron. The first inexpensive way to produce steel, this process was discovered in Sheffield in 1851.
