Technical glossary for stainless steel manufacturers
Most stainless steel manufacturers have a specialist knowledge in the depositing of high quality deposits which are resistant to wear. They pride themselves in providing long term wear solutions for industrial firms.
Most of the stainless steel manufacturers produce stainless steel pipe (Edelstahlrohr) amongst other products, like ball valves (Kugelhahn) the products supplied by stainless steel manufacturers have a high resistance to wear and tear, unlike other metals where corrosion is quite common.
There is more stainless steel produced in Sheffield (renowned for its steel industry) than ever in the past. A glossary of terms which is used in the steel industry can be found listed within this document.
Listed below is a glossary for stainless steel.
- Arc cutting is when an arc is utilised in metal cutting for use between an electrode and the metal which is being cut.
- Binder refers to the boring agent in ceramic slurry or sand.
- Brazing is the joining of solid materials by a process of heating.
- The Build-up sequence is when weld beads are deposited in a certain order.
- Carbon steel refers to steel which contains only 2% carbon and other incidental elements.
- The term casting is used when referring to the production an object of a certain shape by pouring molten metal into a mold.
- Broaching is when machined holes or the outside surfaces of castings are enlarged.
- Casting shrinkage is reducing the volume of liquid metal as the cooling process takes place before the liquid hardens.
- Cavitation damage is the wearing of a metal due to the collapse and formation of cavities in a liquid.
- Chamfering is eliminating a sharp corner by machining an angle.
- Chaplet is supporting a core by inserting a mold cavity.
- Corrosion is when metal deteriorates by a chemical reaction.
- Work hardened steel refers to steel which has undergone an enlarged amount of mechanical resistance.
- Stainless steel shows a high level of resistance to corrosion.
- Alloy steel is a steel which contains elements of alloy.
- Non-alloy steel refers to steel which does not have any alloy elements.
- Coil refers to strips or sheets which are rolled into a cylinder like structure.
- Thin plate refers to a plate with a thickness which is less or equal to 5.00mm and no larger than 0.30mm.
- The final thickness of thin plate which is achieved by cold lamination is called cold rolled thin plate.
- A natural edge is obtained when there is no final trimming after cold lamination.
- A bainitic structure which is obtained with controlled cooling is also known as Baintitic steel.
- Steel used for electrical purposes has a high silicon content.
- A reel with a strip width which is equal to its width is known as a single coil.
- A zig-zag coil refers to a reel which is rolled with an oscillating system and has a width which is greater than the width of the plate or strip.
- Steel suitable for hot or cold stamping usually has good ductility characteristics and is known within the industry as steel for stamping.
