Technical uses for knives
Knives are used for many different things, not just for using alongside a fork on the dinner table. There are many types of knives in cooking and they are all used to chop different things in the kitchen. A chef’s knife for instance is used for most of the basic food preparation tasks in a kitchen, such as slicing and dicing vegetables, fruits, meats and cheese. Kitchen knives are all sold in different sizes, although they all perform the same task to the same standard. There is also a carving knife which is used to carve chicken, turkey, beef and gammon. Plus a bread knife which of course cuts through bread well. A pepper mill (Pfeffermühle) can usually be found alongside the knife block in a kitchen, to enable the chef the season the food he/she is preparing.
As well as the obvious choice of kitchen knives, knives (Messer) are used by martial artists as part of their sport. The samurai for instance, originating from Japan, they are known as warriors, they are well trained and highly skilled. They serve their masters (diamyo) with absolute loyalty, even if it does end in death. There use of the sword as part of their art is fantastic. The martial art Kendo also has use of swords. Kendo is physically and mentally challenging as a sport, and requires that the inner strength of those who compete in this art form.
The Swiss army knife, is not just a knife it is actually a multi-function pocket knife which has all sorts of useful implements such as screwdrivers, cork screws and can openers. All of these attachments can be folded into a knife which is as big as a pen knife and easily fits in any pocket. It originated in Switzerland in 1897, hence the term ‘Swiss army’ knife.
There are also knives which are used for hunting, whether it be on land or in the sea, there are all kinds of manufacturers for all models of knifes. There are specialist knives which are used in the cutting of trees and forests. All of these knives are made and supplied by various suppliers all over the world, and can be found easily using the internet searches.
Knives are also used in hospitals for operating procedures; incisions are made to the skin with knives for any procedure which is invasive within a hospital.
Knives are also used in crime, and at present there is a massive drive by the government to make children, particularly teenagers aware of the dangers of carrying knives and the damage they can cause.
Whatever the knife there is a use. I have discovered there is a lot more to knives than many people think.
